Остаток слов (The Rest of the Words) Lyrics Meaning

Остаток слов walks the city by touch with the last of its words: guilt held in on the turns, reality traded for dreams, and an invitation — sit, smoke, talk — that may be the only real thing left.

The title announces a scarcity: not a flood of words but an остаток — a remainder, what's left at the bottom. The song is what a person does with the last of them after love, friendship, and the city have all gone quiet. (English renderings below are interpretive translations of the Russian lyric, not an official translation.)

The remainder of words

The first verse opens with the title in action: "Остаток слов, и без эмоций иду по городу наощупь" — the remainder of words, and emotionless I walk the city by touch. The city is navigated like a dark room. He is "завис" — frozen, buffering — "на подъездах, на лестничных клетках," hanging on entryways and stairwells, "просто дымя, не думая" — just smoking, not thinking.

The verse's break-up logic is delivered in one exhausted breath: "не жаль ни тебя, ни меня" — sorry for neither you nor me — followed by the instruction "просто уйди и замолчи" — just leave and go silent. And then the rhyme that counts the loss: "Нет меня, нет меня, раз-два и не любя" — there's no me, no me, one-two and without love. Counting to two like a dismissal drill.

Guilt on the turns

The chorus names the motion: "На виражах, держа в себе чувство вины / Я уходил от реальности в сны" — on the sharp turns, holding the feeling of guilt inside, I was leaving reality for dreams. The turns (виражи) are where speed and guilt meet: the faster the escape, the tighter the guilt is held.

Verse two supplies the guilt's origin: "Я помню тот день, ту ночь в которой не смог тебе помочь" — I remember that day, that night when I couldn't help you — and the cover-up, hauling away someone's talk "под обманом мусоров," under the cops' deception, unable to tell her. A thousand words, he says, he'd turn over "чтобы в тебя проник этот ёбаный звук" — so that this fucking sound would get into you. The remainder of words is spent trying to transmit one sound.

Brother, let's just sit

Against all that velocity, the chorus offers its counter-image, three infinitives: "Братан, давай посидим / Давай подымим, давай поговорим" — brother, let's sit a while, let's smoke, let's talk. After the city walked by touch and the reality fled into dreams, the song's entire program for recovery is sitting still with one person.

The second verse admits the wreckage in landscape terms: "наши реки не слиты, и мы битом пропитаны / Дороги забыты, и тропы сбиты" — our rivers never merged, we're soaked in the beat, the roads forgotten, the paths lost. And the closing count: "Город спит и небо затянуто дымом / И всё, я считаю: три, и полетим" — the city sleeps, the sky is drawn with smoke, and that's it, I count: three, and we fly.

"Остаток слов" ends without spending its last words on resolution. The chorus repeats into the outro — sit, smoke, talk — because in a song about running out of language, the invitation to share silence is the only sentence that never runs out.
